Wang Yi Holds Talks with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen

On May 19, 2025, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, who is in China for a visit, in Beijing.

Wang Yi said that Denmark is one of the first Western countries to recognize and establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, and the two countries have walked together for three-quarters of a century. The two countries have always treated each other with mutual respect and on equal footing, established and developed a comprehensive strategic partnership, and built a high-level, mutually beneficial cooperation guided by the vision of green development. Both sides should uphold the original aspiration of establishing diplomatic relations, take the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations as an opportunity to maintain high-level exchanges, enhance political mutual trust, and work for the greater development of China-Denmark relations.

Wang Yi said that the most important experience in keeping the sound and stable development of China-Denmark relations over the past 75 years is the commitment to equality between countries, regardless of size, and to respecting and accommodating each other's core interests. The two sides should make joint efforts to cement the political foundation of bilateral relations. The Chinese side fully respects Denmark's sovereignty and territorial integrity on the issue of Greenland, and hopes that Denmark will continue to support China's legitimate position on matters concerning its sovereignty and territorial integrity. China is ready to work with Denmark to uphold mutual openness, inject new impetus into practical cooperation through green development, and continue to deepen cooperation in economy and trade, scientific research and innovation, the green economy and other fields. China is committed to expanding high-standard opening up, and will create broader development opportunities for foreign-funded enterprises. Danish companies are welcome to invest and do business in China. Wang Yi also expressed the hope that Denmark will provide a fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese enterprises. The two sides should strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges to continue gathering positive momentum for bilateral relations through people-to-people friendship.

Wang Yi said that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union (EU). Since the beginning of this year, China-EU relations have shown a steady and positive momentum. President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang exchanged congratulatory messages on the 50th anniversary of the establishment of China-EU diplomatic relations with President Antonio Costa and President Ursula von der Leyen respectively, affirming the political consensus on advancing China-EU relations. As Denmark is set to assume the rotating presidency of the EU in the second half of this year, China is ready to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with the EU and jointly promote the sound development of China-EU relations. Wang Yi expressed the hope that Denmark will play an active role in this regard. Wang Yi also noted that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations (UN). At a time when the international landscape is experiencing severe turbulence and the post-World War II international system is facing serious challenges, global governance is now standing at a new crossroads. Denmark assumed its role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in January this year. China and Denmark share broad common understandings on upholding multilateralism and defending free trade. China is ready to strengthen coordination and cooperation with Denmark and other European countries to jointly safeguard the international system with the United Nations at its core and the multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization at its core, and contribute to global peace, stability, development and prosperity.

Lars Løkke Rasmussen said that the Danish people and Chinese people share a history of friendly exchanges spanning over 300 years, and that the two countries will jointly celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year. The Danish government and parliament remain firmly committed to the one-China policy, and are willing to strengthen high-level exchanges with China, enhance dialogue and mutual understanding across various fields, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in investment, green transition and other areas, and promote people-to-people exchanges to ensure the continued robust development of bilateral relations. The Danish side holds an open attitude towards Chinese enterprises investing in Denmark, and Danish enterprises are also committed to long-term investment and development in the Chinese market. The Danish side is willing to play a constructive role in the sound development of EU-China relations. Denmark firmly supports free trade, opposes "decoupling", and believes that trade wars are not in the interest of either party. He expressed expectation to strengthen communication and coordination with China on multilateral affairs, jointly uphold the multilateral system and international order, and maintain the momentum of globalization.

The two sides also had an exchange of views on international and regional issues, including the Ukraine crisis.

Following the talks, the two sides exchanged copies of the front page of People's Daily published on the day China-Denmark diplomatic relations were established, a copy of Denmark's note of recognition of the People's Republic of China, and a commemorative envelope marking the 75th anniversary of the establishment of China-Denmark diplomatic relations.
